Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Surgery

Conditions, Treatments & Surgery

If you’ve previously broken a bone in your arm or sprained a wrist, you would know how important the hands, wrists and elbows are for enabling simple movements and assisting with everyday tasks. You would also know how crucial it is to receive the best treatment possible for your condition. Thankfully, our elbow, wrist and hand specialists at Perth’s Murdoch Orthopaedic Clinic can help.

Although relatively small compared to the rest of the body, the hand alone contains 27 (if not more) bones, 34 muscles in the fingers and thumb, 17 muscles in the palm and 18 muscles in the forearm. The human hand is a delicate yet tough instrument used for a variety of activities including writing, sports, body language, movement and more.

Conditions of the hand, wrist or elbow can have a large effect on the entire body and can greatly influence the way we go about our daily lives. Our hand surgeons in Perth can assist with both common and uncommon injuries concerning the upper extremities and can help with diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions.

As individual cases vary, our specialists will analyse your condition and recommend treatment options according your needs. Depending on your condition, surgery may be recommended to help improve or alleviate symptoms and potentially restore functionality. Our highly skilled and experienced team at the Murdoch Orthopaedic Clinic can assist with a wide range of conditions concerning the hand, wrist and upper extremities including:

  • Fractures and dislocations – if you break a bone, you may want to consult our hand, elbow and wrist surgeons in Perth. Surgery can assist with rectifying the break and reduce pain and other issues which may arise in the future.
  • Base of thumb and wrist arthritis – this involves the breakdown of cartilage around the joints, resulting in pain, stiffness and inflammation. Speak to our specialists about our hand, elbow and wrist surgery in Perth or other treatment options.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – is a condition derived from increased pressure on the median nerve located in the wrist. This can cause tingling in the fingers or palms and can create irreversible nerve damage. Ask our experienced wrist and hand specialists about carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome – similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome involves the stretching of the ulna nerve or “funny bone”. This can cause numbness in the fingers and pain in the forearm.
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) – is a condition where the elbow is sore and tender as a result of overuse. Treatment options include protecting the elbow from straining further as well as medication.
  • Dupuytren’s contracture – occurs when the fingers curl inwards towards the palm and are unable to straighten. There are some treatment options available; however, we suggest speaking to one of our hand surgeons in Perth for further information.
  • Wrist and elbow arthroscopy – our wrist surgeons can perform arthroscopic surgery when necessary. This is a minimally invasive procedure on the wrist or elbow.

If you think you may be experiencing any of the above conditions, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately. Our friendly staff can book an appointment for you to see one of our specialist doctors.
